Reactive power control relays are designed to reduce the reactive (inductive and capacitive) powers that are not used by the loads but drawn from the network. If inductive reactive power is drawn from the network, it intervenes by drawing a capacitor of the appropriate value. If capacitive reactive power is drawn from the network, it intervenes by drawing a shunt reactor of the appropriate value. In this way, it tries to reduce the inductive/active and capacitive/active ratios of the system.
